Position: Assistant Professor in Natural Resources Management Affiliation and Location: Natural Resources Management (NRM) Academic Program, Department of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (DFANR) at the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Pathum Thani, Thailand. Background: a) The Institute: The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), founded in 1959, is an autonomous, non-profit, international, postgraduate educational institution. The institute offers degree and non-degree programs in three Schools. AIT promotes technological change and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region through higher education, research, and outreach. AIT has become a leading regional postgraduate institution and is actively working with public and private sector partners throughout the region and with some of the top universities in the world. It offers Master and Doctoral degrees, diploma and certificate programs in engineering, science, planning and management, and serves over 2,000 students from various countries across Asia and beyond. Faculty members, researchers, support staff members, and students from more than 45 countries form a unique international community on the institute’s beautifully-landscaped residential campus, situated 42 km north of Bangkok. b) The Academic Program: The NRM Academic Program was launched in 1987, as Interdisciplinary Natural Resource Development and Management, and builds on longstanding strengths in postgraduate teaching and research supervision in the interdisciplinary fields of natural resource assessment, land resource management, biodiversity conservation, forest carbon accounting, natural resource economics, nature-based solutions, and natural resource policy. The alumni of the NRM have been working in a broad range of organizations including international organizations, research organizations, development agencies, government offices, non-governmental organizations, and private-sector companies. Applications are invited for a direct-hire full-time faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the NRM Academic Program for the appointment in January 2025. The NRM seeks a highly motivated and qualified individual who has expertise in conventional and modern forestry, REDD+, forest carbon accounting and monitoring, nature-based solutions for carbon capture, biodiversity conservation, ICT-based natural resource management, and NRM & sustainability business. |
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to:

Teach 4-5 graduate courses in natural resource management, including but not limited to the following courses: Nature-based Solutions for Natural Resources Management; Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services; Forestry and REDD+; Resources Assessment and Mapping; and Natural Resources Management Field Laboratory.

Engage in research supervision of Master and Ph.D students, as well as postdocs and other research staff as necessary.

Publish research results in peer-reviewed reputed journals with colleagues and students.

Take initiatives in bringing sponsored research projects and developing cooperative links to partners.

Be involved in the conduct of training programs, workshops, Hackathon, and other capacity building activities supported by regional or international agencies in both the public and private sectors.

Provide administrative services to the academic program, department, school, task force, and institute.
Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have the following qualifications.

A Ph.D. or doctoral degree from a recognized university with meritorious academic record and specialization in Natural Resources Management, Forestry, Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services, Natural Resource Management Informatics, AI-driven forest Planning and Management or a closely related field.

Experience in developing and teaching courses at the graduate level.

Experience in supervising graduate students and postdoc researchers.

A publication record in international peer-reviewed reputed journals with Scopus h-index greater than 5.

Research and professional experience in one or more of the following areas: forest carbon accounting and monitoring; nature-based solution for carbon capture; carbon credit; carbon standards; ICT-based natural resource management; use of AI, IoT, and drone in natural resources management.

Has more than two years of postdoctoral or director-level work experience in natural resources management or a related field.

Experience in grant proposal writing and obtaining research projects through international competition, as well as in project management.

Experience in organizing/co-organizing training, workshops, and hackathon events.

Experience in conducting field work in rural areas in developing countries.

Knowledge of entrepreneurship and experience in owning or advising a business startup related to natural resource management.

International exposure and experience. Has more than two years of work experience outside the home country.

Professional experience working in multinational and multicultural working environments.

Previous exposure to the context and problems in the Asian Region.

Knowledge of or proficiency in an Asian language.

Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Appointment The initial appointment will be at the rank of an Assistant Professor for two years. The contract is renewable based on the performance appraisal. It is also possible to earn additional income by carrying out consultancy services as provisioned in the institute’s policies and procedures.
