FIELD RESEARCH COORDINATOR (FRC)

Project Description:

Asian Institute of Technology was recently awarded by Gates Foundation a 2-year research and capacity development project. While the Research and Training Program focus is on aquaculture development in Nigeria, the farmer training and mentoring are to be conducted in both Thailand and Nigeria.

Position Summary:

The Field Research Coordinator (FRC) will be responsible for the supervision and management of field research component of the project in Nigeria. FRC is also responsible for managing and coordinating in-country training and mentoring programs. FRC should have the skills to conduct and promote field research and develop and implement training and communication systems in Nigeria. He/she works closely with the project team to ensure all the project deliverables have been successfully completed.

This is a full-time position based in AIT, Thailand and Nigeria. The FRC is a fully competent professional contributor who can work independently with little supervision and applies his/her research skills to assist the project management team and subject specialists in completing assignments or assigned project tasks.

FRC should be fluent in English. Experience in working with research projects, especially in African countries, is an added advantage.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Project Consultant (field operations), Field Office Managers, Research Assistants and AIT doctoral students to carry out field research component efficiently and effectively.
  • Consult with AIT’s Project Management Team regularly and update the field progress weekly.
  • Update National Advisory Committee (NAC) members on the project status.
  • Design and implement in-country farmer-mentoring programs in Nigeria.
  • Improve/ update training materials; identifying gaps in training content and materials that need updating (with feedback from trainees).
  • Supervise and support field staff of tilapia and catfish strain comparison projects in Nigeria.
  • Assist in designing and supporting the implementation of research work plans.
  • Ensure effective and efficient operations of the field research projects.
  • Provide guidance and support to national project staff and partners.
  • Represent AIT at external meetings and consultations in Nigeria, ensuring that the projects’ objectives and outputs are communicated appropriately.
  • Maintain the dialogue between AIT and its partners in Nigeria.
  • Travel to Nigeria as required.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly progress reports for review by the AIT project management team.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the project promotional plans (in Nigeria and internationally).
  • Any other task assigned by the Project Management Team.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in the relevant field and 5 years of project research experience, or a master’s degree with 10 years of extensive research experience in projects.
  • Spoken and written fluency in English is essential. Fluency in Thai is desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in aquaculture/agriculture research projects.
  • Excellent research writing skills and scientific research publication record.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse nationalities.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, and comfortable in a highly dynamic, research environment.
  • Proven computer skills, familiarity with Windows, the Microsoft Office Suite, databases, social media, etc. (Skills in Microsoft Project Management is an added advantage).

Duration: The appointment will be for 2 years, with a 3-month probation period.
